A 17-year-old boy has been released on bail following his arrest on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with a river car crash that resulted in three fatalities. The crash occurred when an Audi A3 carrying five passengers broke through metal barriers and plunged into the River Wear in Sunderland.
Among those who died were Jackson Duke, aged 17, and two 16-year-olds, Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw. A fourth teenager, also 17, managed to escape from the vehicle and was hospitalized but later discharged. He was subsequently arrested and released on bail as investigations continue.
Zara Shaw, who attended Christ’s College in Sunderland from early childhood until age 16, was remembered fondly by the school community. A spokesperson for the institution described her as a “kind, loyal student with a close-knit circle of friends,” adding that she was diligent in her studies and a pleasure to teach.
Authorities are continuing their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with further updates expected as the investigation progresses.
