Three teenagers died after a car entered the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland on Tuesday afternoon, police have confirmed. The victims were identified as Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge, 16, both from Sunderland, and Zara Shaw, 16, from Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham. A fourth teenager escaped the vehicle and was treated in hospital for non-serious injuries.
Emergency services received reports of a black Audi A3 entering the river, and the bodies were recovered later that evening. Authorities have arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, though it has not yet been determined who was driving at the time of the incident. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved. Police investigations are ongoing.
Officers continue to offer support to the families of the deceased. Friends and community members gathered near the riverside to pay tribute, leaving flowers and sympathy cards. Among the memorials was a white heart-shaped balloon holding messages from students at Sunderland College, where all three had been enrolled. The college expressed profound sadness at the loss, describing it as "a heartbreaking loss for our college community, and the wider city of Sunderland."
HM Coastguard, police diving teams, and local officers remained at the scene during the removal of the vehicle from the river on Wednesday. Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie, the police area commander for Sunderland, appealed to the public to refrain from speculation on social media as inquiries continue.
