Road accidents in Bangladesh claimed 423 lives and injured 674 people across 442 incidents during September, according to data from the Road Safety Foundation (RSF). On average, 14 people died each day in these crashes, which were reported nationwide.

The fatalities included 73 women and 61 children, the RSF analysis revealed. The report was compiled using information from nine national newspapers, 17 national and regional online news outlets, electronic media, and the foundation’s own sources.

Motorcycle accidents were responsible for 154 of the crashes, accounting for approximately 35% of incidents and 139 deaths, or nearly 33% of the overall fatalities. Pedestrians comprised 106 of the deaths, representing roughly 25% of those killed. Drivers and helpers made up 53 of the fatalities, about 12.5% of the total.

Beyond road incidents, there were 11 waterway accidents resulting in 16 deaths, seven injuries, and four missing persons during the month. Additionally, 23 railway-related incidents led to 19 deaths and six injuries.

In terms of vehicles involved, 691 were registered in the crashes, including 162 motorcycles, 129 three-wheelers, and 113 buses. The Dhaka division experienced the highest number of crashes, with 132 incidents leading to 134 deaths. Sylhet reported the fewest crashes and fatalities, recording 20 incidents with 21 deaths.

Among districts, Gazipur had the highest number of deaths, with 38 people killed in road accidents during the month. Within Dhaka city, there were 52 road crashes that caused 21 deaths and left 47 people injured.

The Road Safety Foundation identified speeding and loss of vehicle control as the primary causes behind most accidents in September.
