Brisbane Roar began their A-League campaign with a 2-1 home victory over Perth Glory on Friday night, signaling a promising start following a significant squad overhaul during the off-season. The win was highlighted by the emerging partnership between South Korean attacking midfielder Nam Tae-hee and Australian midfielder Tyrese Francois, who joined the Roar after a period away from competitive football.
Last season, Brisbane struggled with creativity and goal-scoring, finishing second-last on the league ladder. This outcome prompted club management to revamp the team extensively, bringing in Nam and Francois among other new signings to enhance their attacking options.
Francois, formerly of Fulham, described the team's current makeup as a “new group” embarking on a fresh journey. Speaking after the match, he expressed optimism about playing alongside Nam, noting the South Korean’s ability to influence games. Nam’s performance included a standout volley that has already been mentioned as a potential contender for goal of the season.
“He’s got quality. We all know that,” Francois said, referring to the 35-year-old midfielder. “He’s one player who can change a game at any moment. We just need to keep getting him in the right areas. He’s a huge signing for Brisbane Roar.”
For Francois, the game marked his first competitive appearance since January, and he stated that he is still building match fitness and momentum. “I’m really excited for what we’ve got going here and what we can do this season,” he said.
The Roar’s revamped lineup and the promising link between Nam and Francois have increased expectations among fans and analysts alike, with hopes that the club’s attacking play will become more dynamic and effective as the season progresses.
