A letter written by author Robert Louis Stevenson that offers a candid glimpse into his youthful party lifestyle is set to be auctioned in Malaga, Spain, this Thursday, with estimates valuing it at up to £7,000.

The 19th-century Scottish novelist, best known for works such as "Treasure Island" and "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde," composed the letter while on a pleasure cruise along the west coast of Scotland. At the time, Stevenson was 23 years old and writing to his mother. In the letter, he described his indulgent behavior aboard a yacht, where he was a guest of his friend and advocate Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson.

In the correspondence, Stevenson depicts himself as living a largely hedonistic existence, confessing to heavy drinking and savoring elaborate meals of steaks and chops. He wrote, "I eat, I drink, I sleep; generally I live as a beast. It is so nice. It is also so beautiful," conveying a mixture of exhaustion and enjoyment in his lifestyle.

Francisco Pinero of International Autograph Auctions Europe remarked on the significance of the letter, calling it “an entertaining and highly personal” document. Pinero noted that the letter showcases the young Stevenson’s humor, keen observations, and developing literary voice—traits that would later define his celebrated career.

Stevenson, who died at the age of 44, remains a prominent figure in literary history, and this letter is expected to draw considerable interest from collectors and enthusiasts eager to own a piece of his early life and reflections.
