Robert Sanchez has credited Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso’s approach to simplifying the game as a key factor in improving his performance as the club’s goalkeeper. The 28-year-old Spaniard pointed to Alonso’s management style, which contrasts with that of former manager Liam Rosenior, under whom Sanchez was dropped in favor of Filip Jorgensen during a critical phase of last season.

Under Rosenior’s leadership, Chelsea implemented a style focused heavily on playing the ball out from the back, a system that some felt did not suit Sanchez’s strengths. Since Alonso’s arrival, however, Sanchez has found a renewed sense of confidence through a more straightforward tactical approach. “It is the simplification of things,” Sanchez said. “He is allowing me to do what I am best at. That means my confidence is going to be boosted, and I am going to play better and better.”

Alongside his praise for Alonso’s methods, Sanchez also highlighted the benefits of healthy competition within the squad, particularly with fellow goalkeeper Mike Penders. The 21-year-old Penders joined Chelsea last summer but spent the previous season on loan at the club’s sister team, Strasbourg. Having recently returned to Chelsea for their pre-season tour after competing in the World Cup with Belgium, Penders is poised to challenge Sanchez for the starting goalkeeper position.

Sanchez welcomed the rivalry, describing Penders as “great” and acknowledging his strong performances at Strasbourg. “We already had him at the Club World Cup last year. He is a great, young goalie and he had a great season at Strasbourg last year,” Sanchez remarked, suggesting that this competition could benefit both goalkeepers and the team as a whole.
