Roberto De Zerbi has signaled that Tottenham Hotspur’s extensive summer transfer activity is ongoing as he works to reshape the team ahead of the new Premier League season. The club has invested approximately £237 million so far in an effort to end successive 17th-place finishes, narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day last season.

Among the high-profile signings is Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, secured in a club-record deal that could total £100 million. Tottenham has also acquired Mateus Fernandes from the recently relegated West Ham for £85 million and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million. Additionally, the club has bolstered its squad with free-agent signings Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson, and Marcos Senesi.

De Zerbi, who took charge towards the end of last season following Igor Tudor’s departure, emphasized that the rebuilding process is not yet complete. He described the project as beginning “in another part of the history of the club” and highlighted the importance of building a team with both quality and character. “To build a soul, to build a new team with the qualities for sure but with soul, with passion, with all the values we have,” De Zerbi said.

The Italian coach noted that he spent significant time understanding the club’s vision before joining in April and said there is a clear plan shared by the ownership. He expressed optimism about the current progress, stressing the commitment of the players to the project and the need for a collective effort both on and off the pitch. De Zerbi outlined that football now extends beyond matchday performance to include the dedication and attitude players bring in their daily professional lives.

Acknowledging the Premier League’s competitive nature, De Zerbi also stressed that Tottenham must significantly improve their standing. “Tottenham deserve to compete for the top of the Premier League,” he said. The club recently began pre-season preparations with a friendly against MK Dons at their Enfield training ground, which De Zerbi hopes will mark the beginning of a resurgence.

The coach conveyed confidence that with motivation, good organisation, and focus, the team can achieve its objectives despite the challenges ahead.
