Roberto De Zerbi has expressed confidence that Tottenham Hotspur forward Dejan Kulusevski will return stronger when he makes his long-awaited comeback in their Premier League match against Coventry City. Kulusevski, 26, has been sidelined since May 11 last year after sustaining a severe patella injury in a collision with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, which required surgery and extensive rehabilitation.
After 526 days out of action and experiencing three managerial changes at the club, Kulusevski is set to feature on the bench for Tottenham’s home fixture against relegation-threatened Coventry. De Zerbi welcomed the Swedish international’s return, particularly given the absence of new £75 million signing Paulo Savio, who is sidelined with a muscle injury.
The Spurs head coach highlighted the psychological challenges of injury, underscoring that such setbacks can foster mental resilience in players. “It is the worst situation for a player, but injury can also be important for a player because you can work on your spirit,” De Zerbi said. He added that players must focus on setting targets and overcoming pain and difficult moments as part of their development, suggesting Kulusevski could emerge from his injury with a stronger character and improved performance levels.
Kulusevski’s return follows a similar path taken by midfielder James Maddison, 29, who also faced a significant injury after suffering a torn ACL on May 1, 2025. Maddison returned to the bench late last season and is nearing full fitness.
Ahead of their match against Coventry, Tottenham’s squad recently undertook a team-building trip to Marbella, Spain. De Zerbi instituted a technology-free regime during meals to encourage bonding and held meetings focused on the team’s current challenges and individual responsibilities. Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, currently sit three points clear of the Premier League’s bottom spot, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming fixture.
Meanwhile, a dispute has arisen between De Zerbi and Tottenham forward Richarlison. The Brazilian striker was left out of the Premier League squad and publicly reacted to comments made by former Everton coach Duncan Ferguson, who criticized the decision. Richarlison acknowledged Ferguson’s remarks on social media, but De Zerbi clarified that the decision to exclude the player originated from the club rather than himself. The Italian coach added that Richarlison is aware of the situation and knows where to reach him if he wishes to discuss it further.
