Researchers at California State University, Long Beach have developed a semi-autonomous robot designed to monitor great white sharks near popular beaches. The floating device, known as the Shark Surveillance Bot, is intended to patrol offshore waters and provide real-time data on shark presence to improve beach safety.

The Shark Lab’s new prototype aims to assist lifeguards and beach authorities by offering continuous surveillance of shark activity. Christopher Lowe, director of the Shark Lab, explained that sharks frequently inhabit coastal areas without posing immediate danger. However, having timely information about the number and location of sharks can enhance decision-making for beach management and public warnings.

The robot’s design incorporates advanced sensor technologies to detect large sharks in the vicinity and transmit data promptly. This approach could reduce the reliance on human spotting efforts, which are often limited by visibility and human error. By enabling near real-time monitoring, the system is intended to help lifeguards respond more effectively to potential risks and maintain public safety without unnecessarily closing beaches.

This initiative reflects growing interest in leveraging technology to address human-wildlife interactions in marine environments. Although great white sharks are known to frequent California’s coastal waters, shark encounters at beaches remain relatively rare. The Shark Surveillance Bot project seeks to balance public safety concerns with the ecological realities of sharks in their natural habitat. Further testing and refinement are planned to evaluate the robot’s effectiveness in operational settings.
