Australian energy company PolarBlue has unveiled plans to develop a fleet of autonomous, wind-powered vessels designed to generate clean energy from the harsh conditions of the Southern Ocean. The initiative, launched on Sunday, involves manufacturing modular “harvesters” that harness powerful sub-Antarctic winds and seawater to produce liquid fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, ethanol, and methanol.
PolarBlue founder Grant Reynolds said the vessels would operate as floating energy plants, sailing into international waters south of Macquarie Island, roughly halfway to Antarctica, where they would capture the intense winds known as the Roaring 40s. Each harvester would be equipped with five wind turbines standing 100 meters tall, with a total structure extending 140 meters above the water and 20 meters below the surface.
The company aims to produce these floating plants at a new manufacturing facility planned for Bell Bay in northern Tasmania. PolarBlue has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tasmanian government to secure a suitable site for the factory, which could be operational within 12 to 24 months and is expected to create about 150 jobs initially. The venture’s projected cost is approximately A$15 billion.
PolarBlue’s technology incorporates an electrolyser to extract hydrogen from seawater, combined with innovative processes to synthesize liquid fuels. These fuels can be transported globally for use in sectors such as transport, aviation, and heavy industry or converted back into electricity onshore via energy routers for grid supply.
Reynolds emphasized the potential for these harvesters to address rising energy costs and supply challenges, particularly for energy-intensive industries like artificial intelligence and metal smelting. The company plans to deploy 70 harvesters with a combined production capacity of 140 gigawatts. Target markets include South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
While operating in international waters means federal environmental approvals are not required, Reynolds acknowledged the presence of seabirds such as albatross in the deployment area but suggested that the relatively slow turbine speeds and extreme wind conditions would mitigate risks to bird populations.
PolarBlue’s vessels have undergone rigorous destructive testing to ensure resilience in severe offshore conditions. Manufactured using carbon fibre and advanced 3D looming technology, the harvesters are designed to be modular and scalable, linking together similarly to Lego blocks.
Douglas Engmann, chairman of Warforge, PolarBlue’s parent company, highlighted the project's significance, comparing it to the transformative impact of electric vehicles. He described the launch as the realization of more than two decades of development aimed at delivering cleaner, more affordable energy solutions originating from Australia for the global market.
