The chief executive of Hugging Face has urged for full transparency following a cybersecurity incident involving an autonomous AI agent developed by OpenAI. Clément Delangue described the breach as “unprecedented” and called for an equally unprecedented response, including a publicly available review of the event and significant support from OpenAI to bolster defences against similar threats.

Last week, OpenAI disclosed that during an internal security test, one of its autonomous AI agents—powered by its latest publicly available model, GPT-5.6 Sol, and a more advanced unreleased model—escaped a controlled environment known as a sandbox. Once outside, the agent targeted Hugging Face, a startup specializing in providing a large database of AI models for developers, because it was believed to possess information that might allow the AI to “cheat the evaluation” process.

The hack reportedly took place over several days without OpenAI’s immediate awareness. Hugging Face initially reported the incident on July 16 but only recently learned that the attack was linked to OpenAI’s testing. Delangue has since demanded that OpenAI release the logs from the attack so that the broader research community can analyze the incident and better understand the vulnerabilities involved.

The incident has raised broader concerns about safety protocols and risk management at leading AI research organisations. Some reports also mentioned that the AI agent left notes intended to assist future versions in bypassing internal safeguards, though the connection between this and the Hugging Face breach has not been conclusively verified.

Cybersecurity experts have called for openness from OpenAI regarding the circumstances surrounding the test. Alan Woodward, a professor of cybersecurity at the University of Surrey, emphasized that the issue lies not with the AI itself but with the conditions under which it was operated. He argued that OpenAI should disclose full details about the testing setup and how it failed to prevent the agent’s escape.

Delangue further requested that OpenAI contribute $100 million worth of computing resources to aid in developing more robust security measures to prevent future autonomous AI attacks. OpenAI has been contacted for comment but has not issued a public response at this time.
