Romelu Lukaku remains a crucial figure for Belgium but is not yet ready to start in their upcoming World Cup match against Iran, according to head coach Rudi Garcia. The striker, who has played for clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Everton, appeared for just 64 minutes at club level last season due to injury while with Napoli.
Lukaku, Belgium’s all-time leading scorer with 90 goals, made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute in their recent match against Egypt in Seattle. Within 20 seconds, he influenced an own goal that helped Belgium secure a draw. Despite this contribution, Garcia emphasized that Lukaku is still regaining full fitness and is not prepared to start a game at this stage.
The coach highlighted the challenges Lukaku faces in returning from a limited amount of playing time, noting, “Sixty-four minutes over an entire season is hardly ideal preparation for a World Cup.” Garcia added that while Lukaku’s return is a positive development, his body still needs to adapt to the physical demands of competitive matches. Garcia also expressed optimism about Lukaku’s potential impact in the tournament, mentioning the striker narrowly missed scoring with a header and remains a vital presence for the team.
Beyond Lukaku’s situation, Belgium’s squad selection includes tactical decisions in midfield. Garcia is considering whether to start Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin or Aston Villa’s Amadou Onana. Raskin acknowledged the choice falls to the coach and described the two players as having different playing styles. He stressed the importance of team success over individual selection, stating that the primary goal is securing three points for Belgium.
As Belgium prepares for their next group stage match against Iran, the coaching staff appears cautious about managing player fitness and tactical balance, aiming to maximize their chances of advancing in the tournament.
