Inter Milan have initiated discussions with Tottenham Hotspur regarding the possible transfer of club captain Cristian Romero. The 28-year-old centre-back, who joined Spurs in 2021, has been linked with a move back to Italy following an eventful five-year spell with the London club.

Romero played a key role in Argentina's run to their second consecutive World Cup final earlier this month. During his time at Tottenham, he has made 156 appearances and contributed to the club’s Europa League triumph last year. However, the defender experienced a challenging 2025-26 season, which included four separate suspensions.

Tottenham’s recent defensive reinforcements appear to have opened the door for Romero’s departure. The club secured Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million and added Marcos Senesi as a free agent in June, bolstering the squad under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Representatives for Romero have been in Milan over the weekend holding talks with Inter Milan. Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, confirmed the negotiations, stating the club is actively pursuing the signing. He added that while discussions are ongoing and such deals can take time, there is clear interest from all parties involved.
