Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been placed on leave from his role as lead analyst for CBS’s NFL coverage following his arrest last week on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence. CBS Sports announced on July 28 that Romo would be on leave “until further notice.” During his absence, former Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt will join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as part of CBS Sports’ lead NFL broadcast team.

Romo, 46, was arrested on July 23 after being stopped while driving southbound on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office report, Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests administered at the scene before being taken into custody, booked, and subsequently released. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 21.

Further details from the sheriff’s office indicated that police stopped Romo after observing him pass other vehicles within a gore area, a section of highway that separates interstate traffic from vehicles entering from an on-ramp. During the traffic stop, police reported that Romo asked officers what a gore area was. An inventory search of Romo’s black Jeep prior to it being towed reportedly uncovered an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage on the passenger side.

CBS Sports did not provide additional comment on the matter beyond the announcement of Romo’s leave. The network's decision reflects a precautionary step as the legal process unfolds.
