Romsey Town was eliminated from the FA Vase following a dramatic penalty shootout defeat against Bridgwater Town in a closely contested first-round match on Saturday. The tie, held at Romsey’s home ground in Hampshire, ended 2-2 after extra time before Bridgwater, who compete in the Western League Premier Division, edged through 6-5 on penalties.

Romsey, who compete in the Wessex League Division One at step six of the English football pyramid, twice took the lead during the match but were unable to hold on. The hosts opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Callum Zikmund capitalized on a rebound after teammate James Martin was initially denied a chance. Bridgwater goalkeeper Ollie Saunders had earlier made a key save to keep out a Martin attempt.

The visitors created several chances, with Jake Llewellyn forcing a save from Romsey keeper Miles Bartram shortly before halftime. A subsequent scramble in the box prompted appeals for a penalty from Bridgwater players, but the referee did not award a spot kick, and the score remained 1-0 at the break.

After an extended first half, Bridgwater found an equalizer in the 69th minute when Will Collins delivered a powerful shot beyond Bartram to level the contest. The Hampshire side responded strongly and re-established their lead in the 83rd minute with a composed finish from substitute Riley Yeates, who combined effectively with fellow substitute Layton Tulk.

Just as Romsey appeared poised to secure the win, Bridgwater’s Harry Horton scored a remarkable overhead kick deep into stoppage time to force extra time. With neither team able to break the deadlock during the additional period, the match proceeded to penalties.

Both sides converted their first five spot-kicks, demonstrating strong nerve under pressure. The shootout was decided when Bridgwater’s Toby Lawrence successfully converted his sixth attempt, while Romsey missed their subsequent kick, sealing their exit from the competition.

The result extends Bridgwater Town’s run in the tournament while Romsey Town’s cup campaign ends after a valiant and thrilling performance against higher-tier opposition.
