Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team training camp ahead of Thursday’s Nations League match against Denmark, deepening uncertainty over his international future. The 41-year-old forward announced his departure on social media following a press conference held by new Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, who stated that team decisions would be made solely by him.
Ronaldo’s decision came after tension between the two, centered around his role on the team. Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, indicated that the team’s needs take precedence over any individual player. The situation escalated after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday—a first in 18 years that he did not feature as a substitute.
The forward missed training earlier in the week and met with Jesus for discussions aimed at resolving their differences. Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença also intervened, adjusting his travel plans to join talks at the team hotel in Malmo. Despite these efforts, Ronaldo did not participate in subsequent training sessions and left the stadium while the squad prepared for the upcoming match.
Jesus acknowledged that he had initially told Ronaldo he might enter the game against Norway for the last 30 minutes but later changed his mind based on how the match unfolded. The coach also noted that Ronaldo agreed to abide by whatever decisions were made, emphasizing that no player could influence his choices. "Rules are the same for everyone," Jesus said, confirming that striker Gonçalo Ramos would start against Denmark.
Further complications reportedly arose from inadequate training facilities at Eleda Stadion, Malmo’s home ground, where the gym lacked equipment to meet Ronaldo’s specific conditioning needs. This issue contributed to the player opting to train separately at the team hotel.
Ronaldo’s Instagram statement expressed his intention to explain his reasons for leaving the camp in due course and wished the team well. He highlighted his long-standing dedication to the national side over a 23-year career, during which he has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances.
The episode raises questions about Ronaldo’s ongoing role in the Portugal squad, especially following recent criticism of his performance during the World Cup. Despite this, Jesus sought to minimize the perception of a rift during his press conference, describing the departure as a professional matter relating to team decisions.
As Portugal prepares to face Denmark, the future of their captain and all-time leading scorer remains uncertain pending further developments.
