Ronald Araujo has emerged as a key figure for Liverpool in their Champions League campaign this season, stepping into an unexpected role with notable impact. The 27-year-old Uruguayan defender, who joined Liverpool on loan from Barcelona in August, has become a regular presence on the right side of defense after initially joining as a centre-back.
Araujo’s contribution has grown significantly in recent weeks. He scored the opening goal in Liverpool’s emphatic Champions League win over LASK and provided an assist to Dominik Szoboszlai in their subsequent victory against Atletico Madrid. Prior to this season, Araujo had only one goal contribution in 35 Champions League appearances, underscoring the significance of his recent influence.
The defender’s versatility has been called upon following injuries to Liverpool’s regular full-backs, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, making Araujo the expected starter in the right-back position for the upcoming match against Villarreal. He acknowledged that while centre-back remains his preferred position, adapting to right-back is not a major challenge, as he has experience in that role from his time at Barcelona. “I try to give everything I can no matter what the manager asks of me,” Araujo said.
Since arriving at Anfield, Araujo has been impressed by Liverpool’s scale and the intensity of its fanbase. “When you get here and see the dimension of this club, the structure, the fans, you know it’s a gigantic team,” he remarked. Having previously played for Barcelona, he is familiar with the pressures that come with representing a top club but emphasized his commitment to meeting those demands. “From the first moment I arrived I had no doubts I had to give everything here.”
Araujo also highlighted differences between life in Liverpool and Barcelona, noting that the passion of the local community and fans is especially intense. He described the atmosphere as “lovely” and expressed satisfaction with the playing time he has received since joining Liverpool. “I am really happy here. I’m having the game time and minutes and that’s what I want.”
Liverpool holds an option to make Araujo’s loan permanent at a fee reported to be around £47 million, but the player has refrained from focusing on future contractual matters. “It’s very early to talk about these things,” he said, emphasizing his priority is to continue developing and contributing to the team’s success.
Expressing confidence in Liverpool’s prospects across multiple competitions, Araujo believes the squad possesses the quality to challenge on all fronts. “I really do believe we have a great side, a team with great players in it with great potential,” he said. “It’s a long season but we are on the right path.”
