A residential complex in Yuncheng, Shanxi province, has implemented an innovative rooftop sprinkler system designed to reduce temperatures during the summer months. Installed at the Xijian Tianmao Guobinfun compound in the Yanhu district, the cooling system uses high-pressure atomizing nozzles mounted on three sides of each building, excluding those facing the street. The system became operational in August 2024 and serves more than 1,000 households across seven apartment buildings in the first phase of the development.

The sprinkler setup releases a dense mist in roughly 10-minute intervals, effectively lowering surface temperatures by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius within minutes and reducing ground temperatures by as much as 12 degrees Celsius, according to Li Yuan, a worker on-site. The volume of water and spray duration are adjusted in real time based on prevailing temperatures, enabling flexible responses to changing conditions.

The system cost over 10 million yuan (approximately $1.48 million) to install. Despite this investment, residents do not face increased fees for its operation, with property charges maintained at 1.3 yuan per square meter monthly and elevator fees at 0.5 yuan per square meter, consistent with rates prior to the sprinkler’s installation.

The idea behind the cooling system draws inspiration from common construction site practices, where sprinklers are used to control dust and reduce heat. Liu Zhongsen, a senior official from Shanxi Tianmao Real Estate Development Co. and a graduate of Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, explained that the system was integrated into the project’s original design to improve residents’ comfort rather than as a publicity stunt. Careful technical planning during architectural development included calculations for water storage capacity and water pressure adjustments to accommodate buildings of varying heights.

Residents have responded positively to the cooling effect. Yang Dandan, who lives in the compound, noted that the air feels fresher and cooler after the sprinkler sessions, enabling her daughter to enjoy outdoor playtime comfortably. Similarly, elderly resident Guo Jizhong praised the system’s impact, highlighting that the artificial snowfall feature activated in winter also benefits air quality and residents’ well-being.

Beyond temperature control, the system offers environmental benefits. Property management personnel report that the mist helps suppress airborne dust and reduces cleaning demands. Additionally, moisture penetrates several centimeters into the soil, supporting vegetation during dry periods and lowering landscaping maintenance costs.

The Yuncheng rooftop sprinkler system exemplifies innovative urban design solutions aimed at mitigating extreme heat, an increasingly urgent issue as heatwaves impact various regions globally. Its dual-season artificial weather mechanisms provide residents with year-round environmental improvements and set a precedent for similar cooling strategies in residential developments.
