Rookie left-hander Zac Thornton has embraced the role of spoiler as the New York Mets continue their pursuit of an American League East title, seeing late-season games as opportunities to influence the playoff picture. Speaking ahead of his anticipated debut in the Subway Series against the New York Yankees on Saturday, Thornton emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum after a recent sweep of the Miami Marlins.

“We want to be spoilers to some people’s seasons,” Thornton said, reflecting on the Mets’ performance in Miami, where they won three straight games against a Marlins team fighting for a National League wild card spot. The victories effectively ended Miami’s playoff hopes and underscored the Mets’ capacity to impact the standings beyond their own position.

Thornton, who has been one of the Mets’ unexpected contributors this season, has posted a 3.53 ERA across 12 starts after entering the year with little fanfare. His emergence from the margins of spring training has added depth to the Mets’ rotation during a critical stretch of the season.

A connection with the Yankees adds a personal dimension to Thornton’s upcoming appearance. He noted that his minor league tenure often overlapped with that of Yankees rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr., to whom he has frequently pitched. “Every single level that I have been at, I have thrown to Lombard, so it will be fun to throw to him in the big leagues,” Thornton said.

As the Mets aim to sustain their strong finish and continue disrupting other teams’ postseason plans, Thornton’s contributions may prove pivotal in a tightly contested division and in the broader playoff landscape.
