Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney expressed strong criticism of the current squad’s performances amid the club’s ongoing struggles this season. Speaking on the Stick to United podcast, Rooney voiced frustration at what he described as a lack of effort and intensity from the players, highlighting their recent poor form.

United currently find themselves 16th in the Premier League standings, having gone eight league games without a victory. Across all competitions, the team has managed just two wins in 12 matches, intensifying pressure on interim manager Michael Carrick. Rooney said the squad is “absolutely a million miles away” from the standard required to compete at the top level, describing them as a “mid-table team” at best. He emphasized the importance of work rate, tackling, and basic team effort—areas he believes players have neglected.

“I would love to go in that dressing room and say, ‘What are you all doing? What type of performances do you think this is?’” Rooney said, lamenting a perceived lack of passion and dedication among some players. He noted that while a few may care, others appear “numb” and disengaged. Rooney also criticized the attitude of players who he feels overestimate their abilities and fail to deliver consistent performances.

The situation has prompted concern among club leadership. Manchester United owners the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe convened a conference call on Monday with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox to discuss Carrick’s position. Despite growing calls for managerial change amid the crisis, the club decided to allow Carrick more time to improve results and team morale. Carrick conducted training as usual on Tuesday.

Rooney suggested that management had previously given hope to the board that the team could rebound without major changes, but he believes a significant overhaul is necessary, a view that has been echoed by many observers considering United’s extended period of underachievement.

As the club prepares for their upcoming Premier League fixtures, all eyes will be on whether Carrick can reverse the team’s fortunes and instill the intensity and professionalism Rooney demanded.
