Jockey Rossa Ryan will be eligible to compete at this month’s York Ebor meeting following the reduction of his suspension from 28 days to 10 days. The ban, initially imposed after Ryan was found to have eased his mount prematurely during a race at Sandown last month, was shortened upon appeal.

During the hearing, the panel reviewed the circumstances surrounding the finish of the 7-furlong maiden race in which Ryan rode Thunder Home. The colt was narrowly beaten by a nose by Zero Error, ridden by Jamie Spencer. The disciplinary panel concluded that although Ryan’s horse could have won had he continued to ride out fully, it was not certain that victory would have been secured. This distinction—between a likelihood and a certainty of winning—resulted in a lesser penalty under racing regulations.

Ryan’s appeal to have the ban rescinded entirely was not upheld, as the panel was unconvinced that he had maintained a sustained effort to the finish. As a result, he will serve a 10-day suspension starting tomorrow. This timeframe allows him to return to racing in time for the York Ebor meeting, which begins 13 days later.
