Emmy Rossum, known for her role in the series “Shameless,” took on a new challenge playing an NYPD officer turned FBI agent in the eight-episode drama series “Furious,” which is currently streaming on Hulu and Disney+. The show centers on Rossum’s character, Alice Black, who teams up with her former colleague Danny Kelly, portrayed by Scoot McNairy, to track a serial killer targeting powerful men connected to a child trafficking ring.

Rossum underwent rigorous preparation for the role, including weapons training. During a training exercise early in the shoot that involved a BB gun drill in rainy conditions, Rossum experienced firsthand the intensity of the physical demands required for the character. Despite wearing protective gear, she was struck in the torso and ultimately stepped back from the exercise, describing the moment as “getting a little too real.”

The series was created by Elizabeth Meriwether, a writer and executive producer known for her work on “New Girl” and “Dying for Sex.” Meriwether drew inspiration from the 1987 thriller “Black Widow,” which features an FBI agent pursuing a female serial killer. While the inspiration is evident, Meriwether emphasized that “Furious” explores more complex and darker psychological themes, focusing on the dynamic between two women with complicated motivations.

Rossum brought a commitment to authenticity to her role, committing to a demanding physical regimen to build 10 pounds of muscle. Her preparation involved daily 90-minute workouts with heavy weights and a strict diet, emphasizing high-protein snacks such as beef jerky. The actress described the physical transformation as empowering, noting how it enhanced her ability to perform stunts and embody a tough, determined character.

The show’s title and themes also draw from Greek mythology, a creative decision Rossum explained. The name “Furious” alludes to the Furies, mythological figures of vengeance, while references to Medusa suggest broader themes of trauma and retribution central to the storyline.

Filming took place primarily in New York City, near Rossum’s home, allowing her to balance professional and personal responsibilities. The actress, who shares two young children with her husband Sam Esmail, noted that her increased workload on “Furious” came with some sacrifices. For instance, she was filming in Rhode Island during much of the New York Knicks’ historic championship run, preventing her from attending games despite being a longtime fan.

Although Rossum’s physical conditioning for the role was demanding, she admitted that maintaining such a regimen is a full-time commitment and has since eased off after completing the series. She expressed enthusiasm for the project and hopes to continue developing similar roles in the future.
