Egyptian para rower Malak Ghoneim earned two silver medals in the PR1 women’s single sculls at the Para Rowing Regatta Championship held in France from May 2 to 4. Ghoneim’s performance highlighted the advancement of Egypt’s para rowing program on the international stage, building on focused training and development efforts within the national team.

Alaa Hassan, Ghoneim’s teammate, also delivered a notable showing in the event. Hassan placed seventh in the first race out of 14 competitors, finishing just five seconds behind a German Paralympian who ranked seventh at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. In the second race, Hassan improved to fifth place. Both athletes were coached by Saher Refaat and benefited from an intensive preparation camp held at the Olympic venue in Paris.

Sherif Al-Qamati, president of the Egyptian Rowing Federation, lauded the athletes’ achievements, emphasizing the steady growth of para rowing in Egypt. He attributed the successes to consistent and rigorous training supported by the federation and coaching staff, underscoring the federation’s commitment to athletes with disabilities. Al-Qamati described the results as a positive indication of Egypt’s potential in para sports, pointing to future regional and global competitions where the country aims to build on these achievements.
