On the third day of Royal Ascot, several competitive races saw notable winners and close finishes across a variety of distances and fields.
The 2:30 p.m. race featured 14 runners and was won by Nola Soul, ridden by jockey J A Heffernan at odds of 11-2. Nola Soul finished half a length ahead of longshot On Just Terms, with Aperoll securing third place. The race was managed by trainer J A Stack.
At 3:05 p.m., Enceladus, piloted by R L Moore and starting at 7-1, secured first place in a 19-runner event. Enceladus narrowly defeated Al Azd and Believed, who finished second and third, respectively. The favorite, Cannes at 7-2 odds, placed fourth. Trainer J P O’Brien prepared Enceladus for the contest.
The 3:40 p.m. race consisted of 12 runners, with Earth Shot clocking a victory under James Doyle at odds of 4-1. Earth Shot triumphed by a head over Johanna Walsh, with Gilded Prize finishing third. Legacy Link, the 13-8 favorite, placed further down the pack. The horse trained by W Haggas showed a strong finish in the tightly contested event.
In the 4:15 p.m. race, Scandinavia, the 11-8 favorite ridden by R L Moore, edged out Trawlerman and Sweet William by a head in an 11-horse field. Scandinavia is trained by A P O’Brien and delivered a decisive win, extending the gap to the third-place finisher.
Moonfall captured the 4:50 p.m. race over a large field of 30 runners, with jockey Zac Lloyd guiding the horse to victory at 13-2 odds. Moonfall finished three-quarters of a length ahead of Outback Heat and Jamestown, who came in second and third. The favorite, We’re Goosers, started at 4-1 and did not secure a top-three finish. Trainer G Boughey prepared Moonfall for the contest.
The 5:35 p.m. race saw an upset as Generic, ridden by James Doyle at 18-1 odds, won by a length over the 11-8 favorite Endorsement. Glacius, at 33-1, completed the top three in a field of 10 runners. The race, overseen by trainer A Balding, featured a tight finish with less favored horses outperforming expectations.
Closing the card at 6:10 p.m., Mezcalà, the joint favorite at 9-2, piloted by T Marquand, narrowly defeated Elarak and Great Acclaim in a 28-runner race. Mezcalà prevailed by a neck in a close finish with the latter competitors also finishing closely behind. Trainer J Channon’s colt performed competently to secure the win. Room Service, another joint favorite, finished fourth.
Several notable dividends were recorded throughout the day, with sizeable payouts on exotic bets, including a trifecta payout exceeding £600 for multiple races. The jackpot for the day’s multi-race bet was not claimed, carrying over a prize pool of £22,096.31 to the following racing day.
