The Royal Navy of Oman (RNO), through the Oman National Hydrographic Office, observed World Hydrography Day on June 21 to underscore the critical role of hydrography in maritime safety and environmental preservation. The annual event highlights advancements in the collection, management, and dissemination of marine data, aiming to support sustainable ocean development amid accelerating digital transformation.

Hydrography, the science of measuring and describing physical features of bodies of water, is undergoing significant digital innovation. This shift enhances not only navigational safety but also broader objectives such as promoting the blue economy and environmental sustainability. By adopting modern technologies and digital standards, the RNO seeks to improve the accuracy and availability of hydrographic data, which is vital for informed decision-making in marine and coastal management.

World Hydrography Day 2026 centered on the theme “Transforming How Ocean Data is Shared,” emphasizing the evolution from traditional data collection methods to comprehensive digital marine spatial data infrastructures. This transformation facilitates more efficient exchange of ocean information across sectors, enabling better planning, navigation, and environmental stewardship.

The event aligns with the strategic goals of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), which advocates for the development of universal hydrographic data models and the expansion of digital tools in maritime affairs. The IHO aims to ensure that hydrographic information is widely accessible and integrated into modern navigation systems and ocean management frameworks.

Through its participation in World Hydrography Day, the Royal Navy of Oman demonstrated its commitment to leveraging digital technologies to enhance maritime domain awareness, safeguard marine environments, and promote sustainable utilization of ocean resources in line with international standards.
