Prince Harry is expected to bring his family to the United Kingdom next month for the first time in four years, sparking hope for a potential reunion with King Charles III and his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet. The Sussex family has reportedly been offered accommodation at a royal residence during their visit, which is tied to an event promoting Harry’s 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.
The prospect of the visit has highlighted ongoing tensions within the royal family, particularly between King Charles and his elder son, Prince William. According to sources close to royal circles, the King’s gesture to welcome Harry and his family has exacerbated longstanding strains with William, whose relationship with the monarch is described by one insider as being at a “very low ebb.” However, representatives for both the King and the Prince of Wales have denied these claims, asserting that William’s relationship with his father remains “incredibly positive” and unchanged.
Since the Sussexes’ departure from official royal duties in early 2020, known as “Megxit,” Harry’s automatic 24-hour police protection in the UK was rescinded, contributing to their reluctance to bring their children from California to Britain. As a result, King Charles has not seen Archie, age seven, and Lilibet, five—who are sixth and seventh in line to the throne—since the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in June 2022.
Speculation about strained relations between the King and William intensified following last weekend’s Trooping the Colour ceremony, where observers noted a reportedly frosty atmosphere. It was reported that Prince William was informed just hours before the event that Meghan Markle would accompany Harry on their UK trip, a development said to have caused additional friction. Some insiders suggest William views the King’s attempts to reconcile with Harry as a “misjudgment.”
Further complicating family dynamics are unresolved grievances related to Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” and a high-profile interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which he made serious allegations against the royal family, including claims of racism. Reportedly, William has distanced himself from Harry to the extent of barring discussions about his brother in his presence and remains unwilling to entertain any form of reconciliation. The brothers are believed not to have spoken since the late Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022.
Princess Catherine’s behavior during the recent Trooping the Colour event also attracted attention, with reports describing her demeanor as unusually tense compared to her typical composure. Although initially attributed to the presence of anti-monarchy protesters, some insiders suggest the strain reflected backstage tensions among senior royal family members, including Queen Camilla, King Charles, and Catherine.
King Charles’s deputy private secretary, Theo Rycroft, who is seen as an important mediator between Charles and Harry, reportedly played a key role in arranging details of the Sussexes’ upcoming visit. While the King has extended an invitation for the family to stay at a royal residence, a response from Harry has not yet been confirmed. On a prior occasion, Harry declined an offer to stay at Buckingham Palace.
Meanwhile, the Prince and Princess of Wales maintained a composed public appearance alongside their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—during the Trooping the Colour and subsequent engagements. By Royal Ascot on Wednesday, relations appeared to have softened somewhat, with Catherine seen curtseying to King Charles and engaging warmly with her husband before leaving the event shortly ahead of other family members.
