Ruben Amorim has described his new role as head coach of AC Milan as a bigger challenge than his previous position at Manchester United. The 41-year-old Portuguese manager, appointed last month to replace Massimiliano Allegri, signed a three-year contract with the Italian Serie A club.
Amorim arrived in Milan this week and expressed his enthusiasm about taking charge of the club, calling it an honor. He noted that AC Milan holds a special place for him, referencing a previous interview in which he had spoken highly of the club. Despite the difficulties the team faced last season, including failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, Amorim said he was ready to embrace the challenge.
“Perhaps it is a greater challenge than the last,” Amorim commented, acknowledging the significant work ahead. He added that, following his tenure at Manchester United, he had initially intended to take on a smaller role but ultimately chose to commit to Milan’s project due to its stature and expectations.
Amorim’s time at Manchester United ended in January after 14 months marked by underwhelming results. His tenure at United was seen as unsuccessful, which adds context to his current admission that leading AC Milan presents an even more demanding task.
The Portuguese coach emphasized that coaching a club of Milan’s stature comes with the pressure to win. “If you’re the Milan coach, you have to play to win,” he said, underscoring the club’s ambitions despite recent struggles.
AC Milan’s decision to appoint Amorim signals a new direction following Massimiliano Allegri’s departure. The club aims to return to the top tier of European football, and Amorim’s experience, particularly in managing high-profile teams, is expected to be a key factor in their efforts to rebuild.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Amorim to see how he adapts to the demands of Serie A and works to restore AC Milan’s competitiveness both domestically and in Europe.
