In a weekend marked by impressive comebacks and upsets at two prominent European ATP tournaments, Arthur Fils and Andrey Rublev advanced to the Barcelona Open final, while Flavio Cobolli halted Alexander Zverev’s title defense in Munich.
At the Barcelona Open on Saturday, Frenchman Arthur Fils rallied from a set down to defeat rising Spanish star Rafael Nadal, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The 19-year-old Fils, returning to competition earlier this year following an eight-month injury hiatus, demonstrated resilience and growing form after a strong run this season that included a runner-up finish to Carlos Alcaraz in Doha. Facing Nadal in front of a supportive local crowd, Fils conceded the first set but adapted to the heavy hitting and pace, ultimately overpowering the former world No.1. “It took me one set to get used to his quality, and then I felt better and finished very strong,” Fils remarked, acknowledging Nadal’s formidable play.
Russian veteran Andrey Rublev also staged a comeback in his semi-final against Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic, overcoming a 3-6 first-set loss to win 6-2, 6-2. The 28-year-old ended a streak of four consecutive semi-final defeats this season, maintaining composure under pressure. “I was down but told myself, ‘I have a chance,’” Rublev said. “The third set was very close. It was dangerous until I managed to break and close the match.” This victory secured Rublev’s 29th career final and his first appearance in a tournament final this year.
Meanwhile, at the Munich Open, Italian player Flavio Cobolli delivered a commanding performance that ended Alexander Zverev’s quest for a fourth consecutive title on clay in his home city. The fourth-seeded Cobolli won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in just under 70 minutes, upsetting the world No. 3 and top seed. Cobolli described the victory as one of his finest matches, especially against Zverev, a close friend on the tour. “I’m a little bit shy when I play with a big player, but today I was really happy with my performance,” he said.
Cobolli will face American second seed Ben Shelton in the Munich final after Shelton defeated qualifier Alex Molcan 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi-final match.
These results set up two finals between youthful contenders and established players, highlighting the dynamic nature of this season’s ATP clay-court swing. Fils and Rublev will meet for the Barcelona title, while Cobolli and Shelton prepare to battle in Munich.
