Hyron Andrews, a 31-year-old lock forward for the Johannesburg Lions, has died following an accident at the team’s hotel in La Rochelle, France, ahead of their Champions Cup match. The incident occurred on October 16, 2026, when Andrews was found unresponsive inside a shower cubicle at the Hôtel Atalante on l’Île de Ré. Emergency services were called but were unable to save him. Local authorities confirmed that Andrews’s death appeared accidental, with no signs of third-party involvement. An autopsy is planned as part of an ongoing investigation.

Andrews, who had recently returned to South Africa after playing for Sale Sharks in England, leaves behind his wife Maiglin and their two young sons. Born in Paarl, Western Cape, he represented South Africa at under-20 level in 2015 and began his professional career with the Durban-based Sharks before moving to Sale in 2024. At Sale, he made 45 appearances, including 19 in the previous season, before rejoining the Johannesburg Lions this year. He had played in three United Rugby Championship matches this season and was part of the Lions’ squad for their European fixtures.

Following the tragedy, the Lions announced they would proceed with their scheduled Champions Cup match against Stade Rochelais, dedicating the game to Andrews’s memory. A moment of silence is planned before all Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup matches during the weekend. Lions chief executive Rudolf Straeuli described Andrews as “not only a gifted player but also a cherished member of our Lions family,” expressing deep condolences to the family.

South African Rugby president Mark Alexander conveyed shock and sympathy, saying the rugby community felt “immense sorrow” over the loss. Sale Sharks director of rugby Alex Sanderson paid tribute to Andrews’s character, recalling him as a skilled player and a charismatic teammate who embraced his time in Manchester and was a devoted family man.

The circumstances of Andrews’s death came nearly a decade after a similar tragedy in European rugby, underscoring the shock to the international rugby community. The investigation by local authorities continues as the sport mourns a respected and much-loved player.
