Kev, an experienced ultra marathon runner, has arrived in Loja, Andalusia, to take part in the 2026 Al Andalus Ultimate, a demanding 230-kilometer race through the mountains of Southern Spain. Known for its challenging conditions, the event is marked by intense heat, difficult terrain, and significant elevation changes, with over 25,000 feet of ascent and descent across five days.
The race, often described by its organizers as “Hot, Hilly, Hard,” takes place annually in July and attracts a field of around 55 runners. Competitors face blistering temperatures—in Loja, forecasted highs reached 43 degrees Celsius—combined with minimal shade along the course. Medical support and checkpoints providing water, ice, and shelter are available throughout, operated by the dedicated race crew led by Eric and Michelle.
Kev, who has completed the race twice previously while failing once, acknowledges the formidable nature of this year’s challenge. His personal best finish time last year was 40 hours, a pace that may not be sufficient given the strict time limits for each stage. The tight schedules limit walking breaks, requiring runners to maintain a consistent and demanding pace under extreme conditions.
Despite a recent injury sustained from a fall in the Lake District that left him with a less-than-perfect knee, Kev remains determined. To prepare for the heat, he incorporated sauna sessions into his training regimen and selected minimal, lightweight gear to mitigate the effects of high temperatures. He emphasizes doing his best regardless of setbacks.
Support and camaraderie play a key role in Kev’s approach. Among the competitors, about 15 are familiar faces, including friends like Chris, with whom he has raced in the Sahara, Arran, and Nottingham; Simon, part of the Sahara race support crew; and Caroline, another experienced ultra runner. This network offers mutual encouragement and practical support, particularly crucial should the heat begin to affect their performance.
The combination of extreme physical exertion, environmental challenges, and the rigors of multiday racing makes the Al Andalus Ultimate a formidable test for any participant. Yet for Kev and his fellow runners, the breathtaking landscapes and the shared experience provide motivation to push through the hardships. As Kev embarks on the race, he remains hopeful and resolute, ready to confront the challenges ahead.
