The wife of British comedian and actor Russell Brand testified in his ongoing trial in London, describing their relationship and his character amid proceedings on multiple charges of rape and sexual assault. Brand, 51, faces seven counts covering alleged offences between 1999 and 2009, a period during which he rose to fame. The trial is approaching its conclusion, with the jury expected soon to begin deliberations.
Laura Gallacher, who married Brand in 2017 and with whom he has three children, appeared in court as a character witness. In testimony delivered calmly, she described Brand as a caring and attentive husband and father. “Russell, my husband, is caring, he is kind, he is a wonderful father to our children. He is an amazing, attentive husband,” Gallacher said, speaking directly while Brand watched from the dock.
Gallacher, 39, said the pair began dating in 2006 when she was 19, but their early relationship faced challenges. She asserted that Brand’s difficulty with monogamy was evident, leading to a breakup when she discovered he was involved with other women. “It was clear it was difficult for him to be monogamous,” she told the court. Gallacher noted that she was “very aware” of Brand’s behavior, which was often reported in the media.
The trial has heard from six women alleging offences that occurred before and during Brand's rise in the entertainment industry. Brand has denied all charges. Some incidents under scrutiny occurred prior to his relationship with Gallacher, including four of the allegations.
Questions about Gallacher’s views on the specific accusations were not permitted by the judge. Additionally, through statements read in court, two of Brand’s former girlfriends offered their perspectives on his behavior. One, Elia Alvarez Diaz, who met Brand at drama school in the 1990s, described their relationship as tumultuous, citing Brand’s unfaithfulness and frequent arguments.
Brand was briefly married to American singer Katy Perry from 2010 to 2011. Gallacher acknowledged a continued friendship with Perry after their marriage ended but stated they “probably did not meet” between 2011 and 2014.
If convicted, Brand faces a potential life sentence. The jury’s verdict is awaited after weeks of testimony examining multiple allegations spanning a decade.
