MONZA, Italy — George Russell recorded the fastest lap in final practice for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday, positioning himself as a strong contender ahead of Sunday’s race at Monza. The Mercedes driver posted a best time of 1:22.219 on the high-speed circuit, known as the “Temple of Speed,” which demands strategic use of aerodynamic slipstreaming.

Russell’s closest challenger in the championship and former teammate, Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, was second fastest, trailing by 0.226 seconds. Hamilton is aiming for a record sixth victory at Monza, a track long favored by Ferrari and its passionate home fans.

Russell sits second in the drivers’ standings, sharing equal points with Hamilton but leading on a 2-1 win count this season. Their rival for the championship, Ferrari’s Kimi Antonelli, who made history as the first Italian in 73 years to lead the championship at Monza, posted the fourth quickest time. Despite his points lead of 59 over Russell and Hamilton, Antonelli is set to start from the back of the grid due to engine penalties, a setback that opens the door for his competitors to narrow the championship gap.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the defending Italian GP winner, was third fastest, slotting in between Hamilton and Antonelli. Other notable performances included McLaren’s Lando Norris, the reigning world champion and winner of the last two races, who set the fifth best time, followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in sixth.

Rounding out the top 10 in final practice were Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad in seventh, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri eighth, with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto at ninth and tenth positions respectively.

Russell also topped Friday’s initial session, following a Ferrari one-two finish earlier in the day, consolidating his status as a key figure to watch in the battle for the Italian Grand Prix victory and the drivers’ championship. The race at Monza is widely anticipated as a crucial juncture in the tightly contested 2026 season.
