Leicester City manager Russell Martin expressed frustration after his team was held to a 1-1 draw by Barnsley at Oakwell Stadium on Sunday. Despite having a numerical advantage for more than an hour following the sending-off of Barnsley’s Luca Connell in the 26th minute, Leicester was unable to secure a victory.

Leicester opened the scoring early in the match when Liam Cullen converted a cross from Luke Thomas in the seventh minute, putting the visitors ahead. However, Barnsley, reduced to ten men after Connell received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Thomas, showed resilience and defensive discipline throughout the remainder of the game.

The hosts managed to equalize in the 61st minute through Reyes Cleary, who capitalized on a loose pass by Leicester’s Warren O’Hara. Cleary’s powerful strike into the top corner leveled the match. Barnsley then nearly clinched a late winner during stoppage time when Patrick Kelly came close to scoring.

Martin expressed disappointment over the missed opportunity to claim back-to-back wins, stating that the team should have secured the win given their dominance, especially during the first half. “We scored an amazing first goal. We played some really brilliant football in the first half, even against 11 men,” he said. “We had so many chances and then the one mistake cost us.” Following the final whistle, some Leicester supporters voiced their dissatisfaction by booing the players and Martin.

On the other side, Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel praised his squad’s determination and mentality. He emphasized the significance of the point earned against a strong opponent while playing with one fewer player for a major portion of the match. “This fire, this passion, this mentality, it’s for me more than a win today,” Stendel said. “We worked hard and we played against the best team in possession in this league with a player less for 75 minutes. We delivered a fight on the pitch. I think the draw is positive for us.” Reflecting on the red card, he acknowledged the challenge posed by the situation but highlighted Barnsley’s strong reaction.

The draw leaves Leicester with a missed chance to build momentum before the upcoming international break, while Barnsley earned a hard-fought point against a favored opponent.
