A coordinated missile and drone attack launched by Russian forces struck Kyiv early Monday, resulting in at least five deaths and extensive damage to the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex. The overnight assault involved approximately 60 missiles and numerous drones targeting not only the Ukrainian capital but also other cities including Kharkiv and Dnipro.
The Dormition Cathedral, a nearly 1,000-year-old landmark within the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra—one of Eastern Orthodoxy’s most sacred sites—caught fire after being hit by a Shahed-type drone, according to Ukrainian officials. While local church leaders reported no injuries within the monastery complex itself, parts of the cathedral's roof and surrounding structures suffered significant damage. Church authorities described the attack as a “crime against Christianity” and called for prayers for the shrine’s preservation. Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, emphasized the spiritual importance of the site, which houses revered catacombs and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as one of Russia’s gravest offenses against Christian cultural heritage. He visited the monastery on Monday and vowed retaliation. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reported widespread fires and damage throughout the city’s districts, causing power outages affecting about 140,000 residents. In Kharkiv, the attack reportedly killed five emergency workers responding to earlier fires, and nine others were injured. The city of Dnipro also sustained damage to infrastructure, including a railway station and educational institutions.
The Russian Defense Ministry characterized the attack as a precision strike against Ukrainian military-industrial targets and claimed it was a response to Ukrainian “terrorist acts.” The ministry denied responsibility for damage to the monastery, alleging it was caused by a missile from a U.S.-supplied Patriot air defense system, though it did not provide evidence supporting this claim. Ukrainian security forces, meanwhile, released images they said showed debris from a Russian Geran-2 drone—a variant of the Iranian Shahed kamikaze drone—recovered at the attack site.
The assault came amid intensified Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russian territory targeting military and energy infrastructure, illustrating an ongoing escalation in the conflict. Russia canceled its Naval Day Parade in St. Petersburg, reportedly due to fears of Ukrainian drone attacks. President Zelensky also criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for actions seen as cynical, noting Putin’s recent public gesture wishing former U.S. President Donald Trump a happy 80th birthday shortly before the attack on Kyiv’s religious heritage.
UNESCO condemned the attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, emphasizing the site's cultural and spiritual significance and highlighting the ongoing risks posed by the war. The monastery had been designated “in danger” by UNESCO in 2023 due to ongoing hostilities in the region. The incident marks a significant escalation in hostilities affecting both civilian populations and cultural heritage sites in Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia.
