Russian drone strikes on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Monday resulted in damage to residential buildings, a university, and a shopping mall, wounding five people, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks came shortly after Kyiv launched an unprecedented drone assault, reportedly deploying more than 1,000 drones targeting various sites within Russia, including areas around Moscow.
The recent escalation highlights the ongoing stalemate in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, which entered its fifth year following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. The timing coincides with the annual U.N. General Assembly, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump, while Russian President Vladimir Putin is not attending.
Trump described the war as “ridiculous” and pointed to significant setbacks for Russia, including damage to its diesel oil production caused by Ukrainian drone strikes on refineries. He expressed concerns over disruptions in global fuel supplies, noting that several Russian diesel refineries had been temporarily put out of commission. Earlier this month, Trump had urged Zelenskyy to halt refinery attacks, citing their impact on global energy markets. In response, Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s numerous diplomatic proposals aimed at achieving a dignified end to the conflict and ensuring security to prevent further Russian aggression.
Throughout Monday, Russia also struck nine other Ukrainian regions, including a fatal drone attack on a residential home in the Kharkiv region, which killed a 45-year-old woman and seriously injured her 13-year-old son. Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, stating that Russia appears prepared to expand the war, and underscored that discussions at the U.N. General Assembly would focus on finding paths to peace through joint international efforts.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported targeting Ukrainian logistics hubs, warehouses, and ports in overnight air raids and claimed to have intercepted 244 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and the Black Sea. Conversely, Ukraine’s air force stated that it successfully shot down or disrupted 148 Russian drones during the same period. Both sides accuse each other of launching drone attacks, reflecting the conflict’s intense and persistent aerial dimension.
The increased drone activity has raised concerns among neighboring countries, as several drones have strayed into their airspace. Moldova temporarily closed part of its northern airspace after detecting an unidentified aerial object crossing its borders near midnight. This marks one of multiple recent violations of Moldovan airspace, with drone debris found on its territory. Moldova’s pro-Western President Maia Sandu has repeatedly condemned Russia’s military actions, warning that the conflict is encroaching upon her country’s borders. Neighboring Romania has also reported a notable rise in drone incursions.
