Russian forces launched a series of intensive drone strikes across multiple cities in Ukraine on Monday, resulting in at least seven deaths and injuring more than 80 people, according to Ukrainian officials. Targets included residential buildings, offices, gas stations, data centers, and cultural sites such as the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv. The attacks coincided with ongoing diplomatic efforts at the United Nations aimed at advancing peace negotiations to end the conflict, which began over four years ago.
The capital, Kyiv, sustained heavy damage when drones hit a variety of locations, including a pharmaceutical company and gas stations. The National Academy of Sciences suffered significant fire damage, with some staff escaping the blaze by climbing down ladders provided by firefighters. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko condemned the strikes as a campaign of “pure terror” targeting civilians, emphasizing the disruption to normal life in the city caused by continuous bombardment.
Other Ukrainian cities were also affected. In Dnipro, a drone strike on an office center during work hours killed three people and wounded at least 18 others. Kharkiv’s northeast region saw a missile strike on a nine-story apartment building that injured 43 people, including 11 children. Zaporizhzhia and the southern port city of Odesa both reported casualties and damage to residential buildings from similar strikes. In northern Ukraine’s Chernihiv region, four civilians were wounded, including two teenage girls, during a drone attack on a residential area.
Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed targeting two data centers and multiple gas stations in Kyiv. They stated that a distribution hub belonging to the Nova Poshta postal service in Odesa was also hit. Additionally, Russian forces claimed to have struck cargo ships in the Black Sea and the port of Chornomorsk, citing these attacks as efforts to disrupt Ukraine’s grain exports, an action that could exacerbate global food shortages in countries dependent on Ukrainian agricultural products.
The Ukrainian military reported ongoing efforts to reclaim territory on the eastern front. The 3rd Army Corps stated it had regained 20 square miles in the Donetsk region as part of an offensive named Operation Vivaldi. The operation reportedly used upgraded Soviet-era armored vehicles converted into autonomous attack units, as well as ground robots, to dismantle Russian fortifications. Conversely, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the capture of villages in both the Donetsk and Sumy regions, though independent verification of these claims is not available.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted counterstrikes inside Russia, claiming long-range drone attacks hit defense plants in the Tula and Voronezh regions and oil infrastructure in the Krasnodar region. Russian authorities acknowledged fires at several infrastructure sites in Krasnodar caused by drone attacks. In response, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 254 Ukrainian drones overnight, underscoring the escalating drone warfare aspect of the conflict.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov attributed the recent assault to retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory and warned that Ukraine would continue to face consequences for its actions. The situation remains volatile, with both sides claiming tactical gains and continuing operations amid the broader stalemate on the ground.
