A Russian missile strike destroyed a nine-story apartment building in Kyiv last week, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 people in one of the deadliest attacks on civilians since the conflict began nearly four years ago. The assault was part of a broader aerial campaign involving approximately 1,500 drones targeting around 180 sites across Ukraine, including numerous residential areas.

The widespread barrage represents a significant effort by Russian forces to exert pressure on Ukraine, but many analysts contend that the country has gained the upper hand in the ongoing conflict. Despite the scale of the attack, Ukraine continues to execute operations deep inside Russian territory, striking critical infrastructure such as oil and defense facilities, including targets near Moscow.

Russia’s military losses have been substantial, with reports indicating that the country is losing around 35,000 troops per month. Alexander Gabuev of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center noted that the war shows little sign of ending, attributing its persistence to the determination of Russian leadership. “The problem is there’s a stubborn guy leading Russia who still seems to believe that Ukraine will fall,” Gabuev said, suggesting that this conviction is driving Moscow to maintain its offensive despite heavy losses and Ukraine’s strategic gains.

The attack on Kyiv underscores the ongoing intensity and human toll of the conflict, as Russia continues to launch large-scale missile and drone strikes despite setbacks on the battlefield. Ukrainian officials have condemned the strikes, emphasizing their impact on civilians and infrastructure, while Moscow has framed its actions as targeting military assets. The war’s trajectory remains uncertain, with both sides enduring heavy casualties and sustaining military operations amid a protracted and bloody confrontation.
