The Russian container ship Yanina sank in the Black Sea following an attack by Ukrainian naval drones, Russian authorities reported on Saturday. The incident occurred on Friday night, roughly 130 nautical miles from the Russian port city of Novorossiysk.

According to the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, the vessel was struck by two Ukrainian naval drones at approximately 10 p.m. Moscow time (1900 GMT). The strike inflicted significant damage, causing the ship to eventually sink. The Yanina was reportedly sailing in international waters and carrying commercial cargo at the time of the attack.

Rosatom confirmed that all 17 crew members aboard the Yanina were successfully rescued and are reported to be in good condition. The rescue operation involved cooperation between Russian Black Sea Fleet naval aviation units and the international crew of the ship Delphinus, which responded to the distress.

Alexei Likhachev, Rosatom’s director general, emphasized that the Yanina was a civilian cargo vessel and underscored that the crew’s safety remained a top priority. The circumstances surrounding the attack reflect ongoing maritime tensions in the Black Sea region amid the broader conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
