KYIV, Ukraine — Russian airstrikes targeted civilian areas in northeastern Ukraine on Saturday, resulting in casualties and property damage. In Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, an apartment building in the Holodnohirskiy district was struck by bombs, killing one person and injuring nine others, including a six-year-old child, local authorities reported.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed the fatality after a body was recovered from the rubble several hours following the attack. Of the nine wounded, five were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional administration. The strikes damaged a low-rise residential building, further exacerbating the toll on the city's civilian population.

Later the same day, Russian forces launched additional guided bomb attacks on the northern city of Sumy. Regional officials indicated that one male civilian was killed when the outskirts of Sumy were targeted, and at least 20 private homes sustained damage in the strikes.

These attacks come amid a broader pattern of Russian military operations across Ukraine, with a focus on urban areas that have experienced repeated shelling and aerial bombardment. Ukrainian officials have condemned the strikes as deliberate assaults on civilian infrastructure.

The humanitarian impact of the bombings continues to raise concerns, with local authorities working to provide medical assistance and assess structural damage. The ongoing conflict in eastern and northern Ukraine persists despite international calls for ceasefire and conflict resolution.
