Recent incidents within the UK have included bombings and arson attacks attributed to Russian-backed operatives, targeting infrastructure and disrupting support operations. Concurrently, Russian-led disinformation campaigns have proliferated on social media, spreading false narratives to weaken public confidence in Western leadership. Among the false claims is the portrayal of London as a center of violent crime, despite official statistics showing the city’s violent crime rates are at their lowest in decades. These campaigns also seek to foment far-right extremism and political division.
The durability of Russia’s control over its federal subjects appears to be waning, particularly after a series of successful Ukrainian strikes on critical infrastructure, including strikes deep inside Russian territory such as Moscow. Analysts suggest these attacks have exposed vulnerabilities in Russia’s logistical network and raised questions about the Kremlin’s ability to sustain its war effort.
Despite its relatively small economy and the severe economic impact of ongoing Western sanctions—especially on its oil sector—Russia continues to exert pressure on Western defence resources. NATO and allied countries have had to significantly increase defence spending to counter what is perceived as an enduring threat from Moscow.
At the same time, European nations and the United States may be considering a strategic shift toward bolstering Ukrainian military operations beyond simply maintaining the current front lines. Rather than a stalemate, the focus could move toward enabling Kyiv to disrupt and ultimately collapse Russian supply chains, potentially causing a broader retreat in occupied territories. Ukraine’s already aggressive medium-range campaign inside Russian-held areas underscores the possibility of such a breakthrough.
