Russia has intensified its use of jet-powered drones in a sustained campaign targeting Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, marking a shift in tactics aimed at overwhelming Ukraine’s air defenses. Since last Thursday, Russia has launched nearly continuous airstrikes employing an increasing number of jet-powered Geran drones, variants of the Iranian Shahed model, which have notably faster speeds compared to earlier versions.

The continuous threat has severely disrupted daily life in Kyiv. Air-raid sirens sound frequently throughout the day, prompting residents to repeatedly seek shelter. Public transportation has become unreliable, with bridge closures further complicating movement. Many businesses and cultural events have been forced to relocate to underground spaces to avoid drone attacks, while some grocery stores and restaurants experience intermittent closures due to safety concerns.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the scale of the attacks over the past four days, reporting that Russia launched approximately 1,500 long-range drones, of which about 800 were jet-powered. He described the drone assaults as a tactic aimed primarily at wearing down the Ukrainian population. The strikes have targeted military and civilian infrastructure, including factories, energy facilities, and supply warehouses. Recent attacks have resulted in significant civilian casualties, notably a drone hit on a Kyiv ammunition depot last Friday, which killed 38 people and injured dozens.

Ukraine’s air defenses have been able to intercept many propeller-driven Geran drones at rates close to 90 percent using interceptor drones and other systems. However, jet-powered variants, capable of speeds up to 480 kilometers per hour—nearly triple that of their predecessors—have proven more challenging to counter. Ukrainian military spokespeople acknowledge a higher proportion of these faster drones are reaching their targets, although precise interception figures have not been publicly released.

To address this evolving threat, Ukrainian defense technology firms are accelerating development of new interceptor drones designed to match the speed and altitude capabilities of the jet-powered Gerans. Companies like Noctis are finalizing updated versions of their interceptor drones and aiming to field a jet-powered model soon. Despite possessing some drones capable of targeting the latest Russian models, Ukraine’s current inventory is limited, with defense officials calling for increased production.

In addition to drone attacks, Russia continues to fire a mixture of ballistic and cruise missiles at Ukrainian cities. Ballistic missiles, in particular, remain difficult to intercept effectively, given Ukraine’s limited supply of advanced Patriot missile defense systems.

The increased reliance on jet-powered drones follows Russia’s earlier strategy of deploying large numbers of slower propeller-driven Shahed drones since late 2022 to saturate Ukrainian air defenses. Over time, Moscow has shifted to a smaller number of more advanced, faster Geran drones, making these the core component of its persistent aerial bombardment campaign. A recent attack on August 6, involving over 100 mostly jet-powered drones, saw Ukraine’s interception rate drop to 65 percent, according to open-source monitoring groups, the lowest this year.

Russia’s intensified drone offensive comes amid stagnant progress on the ground. Despite sustained efforts, Russian forces have advanced little in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region this year and have ceded some territory to Ukrainian counteroffensives in the south. The expanded aerial campaign appears aimed at compensating for these challenges by targeting urban centers and degrading Ukraine’s civilian and military infrastructure.
