Russian forces have intensified the use of jet-powered Geran drones in their aerial campaign against Ukraine, marking a significant shift in the technological landscape of the conflict. These drones have been involved in a series of recent attacks targeting urban centers and critical infrastructure, including the first direct strike on Ukraine’s security service headquarters in Kyiv. One drone reportedly came close to hitting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plane as it prepared to depart from Moldova.
The Geran-4 and Geran-5 models, introduced by Russia in early 2023, represent a notable advancement over earlier propeller-driven drones. The Geran-4 drones can fly at speeds up to 600 km/h and carry a warhead of approximately 90 kilograms, with operational ranges extending to around 1,000 kilometers. These capabilities have allowed Russia to conduct near-continuous strikes on Ukrainian cities since late August, including daytime and mass night-time attacks that have intensified the threat to civilian areas and critical infrastructure such as warehouses and Black Sea ports.
Ukraine’s air force estimated that about 2,800 drone launches occurred in the previous month, a figure that underscores the scale of Moscow’s drone operations. While Ukraine has excelled in developing domestic military technology, the improved performance of Russia’s jet drones has posed a significant challenge. Ukrainian forces have been able to intercept about 60% of these faster drones, lower than the 90-95% interception rates achieved against earlier models. This has compelled Kyiv to increase the use of its fighter jets and stretch its limited supply of sophisticated anti-air missiles.
Experts attribute Russia’s rapid development and deployment of these drones to an efficient centralized production system. Components include Chinese-made turbojet engines combined with Russian electronics, enabling Moscow to adapt designs quickly based on battlefield feedback. Analysts noted that the simplicity of drone manufacturing, relative to more complex military hardware, facilitated mass production and ongoing iterative improvements in the field.
The shift to jet-powered drones has been described by military analysts as part of Russia’s broader strategy to “cruise-ify” its unmanned aerial vehicles, potentially moving toward incorporating stealth features and further enhancing their combat effectiveness. Although these newer drones are more expensive than previous models, they are still considerably cheaper than the cruise missiles Russia has relied on for long-range strikes since the invasion began in 2022. This cost advantage allows Russia to strike a wider array of targets using a more diverse drone and missile arsenal.
Russian drone production also appears to have geopolitical implications. Western and Kremlin-aligned sources have reported that Iran has sought to acquire advanced Geran drones to support its own conflicts involving Israel and the United States. The Geran drones themselves are adaptations of the Iranian Shahed drones.
Ukraine is actively responding to this escalating drone threat, with President Zelenskyy stating that dozens of Ukrainian companies are working on new methods to intercept Geran drones. Firms such as Wild Hornets are developing specialized interceptors designed for these jet-propelled threats, with production expected to ramp up shortly. However, analysts warn that Ukraine’s lack of indigenous anti-air missile manufacturing capability may limit its ability to counter this evolving threat in the near term.
Western officials have suggested that targeting the supply chains for Chinese engines and components used in these drones could slow Russian drone production. Until Ukraine can significantly improve its drone interception capabilities, experts caution that the air war may increasingly tilt in Russia’s favor, especially given the extensive use of drones and low-cost cruise missiles in recent operational campaigns.
