Ryan Coogler is set to reboot the iconic science fiction television series The X-Files with a new cast, Disney announced on October 14. The upcoming series will feature British actor Himesh Patel as Fox Mulder and American actress Danielle Deadwyler as Dana Scully, taking on the lead roles originally portrayed by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

The original series, created by Chris Carter, originally aired from 1993 to 2002 and achieved widespread critical and commercial success, earning multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards. The show also returned for two additional seasons between 2016 and 2018. Known for its blend of paranormal investigation and government conspiracy themes, The X-Files became a defining series of 1990s television.

Coogler, known for his work on the Creed film series, Black Panther, and the Oscar-winning film Sinners, has written, directed, and produced a pilot episode for the new iteration. The series has been acquired by Disney for distribution on its Disney+ streaming platform.

In a statement, Coogler emphasized his desire to respect the legacy of Carter’s original creation while infusing the new series with its own unique perspective. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honour everything that made the original series connect with so many people, while also finding our own way into that world,” he said.

Patel, who has recently appeared in Christopher Nolan’s 2026 film The Odyssey, and Deadwyler, slated to star in an upcoming adaptation of The Bell Jar, will bring fresh interpretations to the characters of Mulder and Scully. The two agents are known in the original series as Federal Bureau of Investigation special agents investigating cases linked to paranormal activity.

Details about the new series’ release date and full cast have yet to be announced. The reboot aims to introduce The X-Files to a new generation of viewers while maintaining the hallmarks that made the original show a cultural phenomenon.
