World No. 1 Elena Rybakina secured her fourth title of the season with a commanding straight-sets victory over Leylah Fernandez in the final of the Ningbo Open on Sunday. The top seed and defending champion defeated the Canadian, ranked 30th globally, 6-2, 6-2 in a match that lasted just 73 minutes.
Rybakina, who also holds titles from the Australian Open and US Open this year, claimed her 15th career WTA title and further strengthened her position in the race for the year-end number one ranking. She thanked the crowd for their support, describing the tournament as a "special place" and expressing appreciation for the motivation and energy she draws from playing in front of the fans.
The match began with Rybakina breaking Fernandez’s serve to take a 4-2 lead in the first set, highlighted by a precise two-handed crosscourt backhand. The Kazakh player maintained pressure, forcing errors from the Canadian, who netted a return to trail 5-2. Rybakina closed out the first set in under 40 minutes.
In the second set, Rybakina quickly secured a break to go up 2-1. Fernandez put up resistance, notably saving two break points in the fourth game, but the defending champion's composure prevailed as she held serve and then broke again to move ahead 5-2. Rybakina sealed the championship on her first match point with a powerful forehand, confirming her dominance throughout the contest.
Rybakina had missed the recent Wuhan Open due to a foot injury, but showed no signs of rust as she controlled the final. Fernandez, aiming for her second title in as many months, was unable to find her rhythm against the clinical and consistent play of the world number one.
The victory marks a continuation of Rybakina’s exceptional season on the WTA Tour, consolidating her status as one of the sport’s leading competitors heading into the closing stages of the year.
