The Smithsonian American Art Museum will transform its Kogod Courtyard into a hub for video game enthusiasts on Saturday, hosting the annual SAAM Arcade event that combines classic and indie gaming experiences. Running from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., the event invites visitors to engage with a diverse selection of games, ranging from iconic titles like Donkey Kong and multiplayer X-Men to new releases developed by independent creators.
This year’s arcade places a particular emphasis on celebrating women in the video game industry. Attendees will have the chance to meet and speak with game developers and designers, offering insight into the creative processes behind the games. The event seeks to highlight the contributions of women to the field and broaden awareness of diverse voices in game development.
Alongside the gaming activities, the Triforce Quartet will perform live renditions of classic video game soundtracks, adding an auditory dimension to the interactive experience. To accommodate all visitors, the event includes a sensory-friendly period during the first 90 minutes, featuring reduced noise levels. Additionally, headphones will be available for use throughout the day to help manage sound sensitivity.
The SAAM Arcade event will be held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, located at Eighth and G streets NW in Washington, D.C. Admission is free, making it accessible to the public and families interested in exploring both gaming history and innovation in a museum setting. Further information is available on the museum’s website.
