Sacha Baron Cohen is set to make his West End debut in Quentin Tarantino’s first original stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, which will premiere at London’s Phoenix Theatre in March 2027. The production marks Tarantino’s initial foray into theatre writing and directing, expanding his career beyond his acclaimed work in film.

The Popinjay Cavalier is described as a lively comedy of deception and disguise, inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen from old Hollywood. Set in 1830s Europe, the story centers on a famed actor who journey’s to Paris for work and finds himself in trouble after offending the French. The play draws influence from the writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda, and Jesse Lasky Jr.

Tarantino, 63, known for directing films such as Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the production to the West End. “I’m keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out,” he said. He had previously revealed plans for the play on his podcast, stating that the script was complete and emphasizing his hope for a successful reception.

Baron Cohen, 54, recognized for his comedic characters including Borat and Ali G, said he accepted the role immediately after Tarantino contacted him. “Quentin called. I said yes before he even got to say his first ‘motherf***er’,” he joked. He described his excitement about their joint West End debut and teased the character’s demanding nature.

The production is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions. The show’s creative team includes fencers, acrobats, and musicians, reflecting the play’s dynamic style. Tom Rothman, chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, and Sonia Friedman praised Tarantino’s storytelling and the involvement of Baron Cohen, highlighting their confidence that audiences will enjoy the performance.

Tickets for The Popinjay Cavalier went on sale in October 2026, with prices starting at £25 and a significant portion priced under £50, making the show accessible to a broad audience. The full cast list is expected to be announced at a later date. Previews are scheduled to begin on February 23, 2027, ahead of the official opening on March 18.
