Trainer Roger Varian is set to field his colt Saddadd as a contender in the upcoming Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on October 4, aiming to challenge the race favorite, Daryz.

Saddadd, owned by Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, delivered a notable performance on September 6 in the 156th running of the Grosser Preis von Baden, securing his fifth win in ten starts. The son of Pinatubo recorded the fastest time over the 1 mile 4 furlongs distance in this century during his first attempt at the ‘Arc’ distance, marking a breakthrough at Group 1 level following a mid-season break.

Varian expressed confidence in Saddadd’s development and adaptability to the race conditions, noting the colt's steady improvement and preference for ground with some cut. With some key competitors seeing their odds lengthen or being out of contention, Varian announced the intent to enter Saddadd in the prestigious French race.

“We plan to run Saddadd in the Arc,” Varian said, highlighting the colt’s progression and maturity. Bookmakers responded by shortening Saddadd’s odds from 40-1 to 25-1 in the lead-up to the event.

Daryz, owned by Aga Khan Studs, remains the clear favorite in betting markets at around 2-1, having demonstrated strong form with a decisive win in the Group 2 Prix Foy trial on the same day Saddadd triumphed in Germany. Daryz is seeking to defend his title in one of Europe’s most celebrated flat races.

The competition for the Arc has shifted in recent weeks. Maltese Cross, initially the second favorite at 6-1 based on stable form, saw his chances diminished following his effort in the St Leger at Doncaster, while another key contender, Kalpana, carries an 8-1 price but must improve from his seventh-place finish in last year’s Arc.

As the field shapes up, attention will focus on whether Saddadd can continue his upward trajectory and pose a serious threat to Daryz and the other hopefuls at Longchamp next month.
