US actress Sadie Sink is in discussions to star in the film adaptation of Emma Cline’s acclaimed novel "The Guest," with filmmaker Lorene Scafaria attached to write and direct the project. The film is being developed by production companies A24 and Square Peg, which are currently in exclusive negotiations to secure the rights to the 2023 bestselling book, according to industry reports. The agreement has not yet been finalized.

Published in 2023, "The Guest" centers on Alex, a young woman who is asked to leave the home of an older man on Long Island following a social misstep at a dinner party. With limited options, Alex remains in the area as Labor Day approaches, leveraging her ability to read people to ingratiate herself with the wealthy families nearby.

The novel received critical acclaim, earning a place on the PEN/Faulkner Award longlist and recognition as one of the best books of the year by outlets such as The New Yorker, Time, and The Washington Post.

Sink, known for her role as Max Mayfield on Netflix’s "Stranger Things," is also set to serve as a producer on the film. Her recent work includes portraying Jean Grey in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," alongside Tom Holland, and she is expected to return in the upcoming Marvel "X-Men" film. Additionally, Sink has been acknowledged for her stage work, earning a Tony Award nomination for her performance in the Broadway play "John Proctor is the Villain."

Lorene Scafaria, whose previous directorial efforts include the 2019 film "Hustlers," is poised to bring her distinct storytelling style to this adaptation. The collaboration with A24 and Square Peg signals a continued interest in adapting literary works with complex female leads for the screen. Further details on production timelines and casting have yet to be announced.
