The New York Jets face continued challenges in their receiving corps ahead of Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, with injuries threatening to limit options for quarterback Geno Smith. Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq may see an expanded role as the team contends with a shrinking group of healthy pass-catchers.
Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell’s availability remains uncertain after he sustained a finger injury during Thursday’s practice. Mitchell participated in a limited capacity in Friday’s session, wearing a wrap on his right hand with his index and middle fingers taped together. He is officially listed as questionable for the upcoming game.
Tight end Mason Taylor is sidelined due to a thumb injury, compounding the Jets’ difficulties. The team was already without receivers Omar Cooper Jr., who is on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain, and Arian Smith, out for the season after tearing his ACL. These absences could lead to more opportunities for Sadiq, the Jets’ first-round draft pick (No. 16 overall), who has showcased versatility with five receptions for 38 yards and a rushing touchdown across the first two games.
Sadiq is aware of the adjustment required at the professional level. “The game is definitely much faster. People are just a lot more technically sound,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s just like, don’t overcomplicate things. Just go out there and do the same thing you know how to do in college.”
Sadiq will be aiming to emulate the success of Detroit Lions rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, who made a significant impact in 2023 with 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. “I’ve definitely watched film on him,” Sadiq said, praising LaPorta’s ability to excel in both run and pass plays, noting his skill in creating separation and his elusiveness.
If Mitchell is unable to play, Isaiah Williams is expected to move up as the No. 2 receiver behind Garrett Wilson. However, Williams struggled in Week 2’s loss to the Green Bay Packers, experiencing a muffed punt and committing multiple penalties.
Head coach Aaron Glenn indicated the Jets plan to bolster depth by elevating either Sterling Shepard or Tyler Johnson from the practice squad. Meanwhile, Jason Sanders is projected to remain the team’s kicker Sunday, marking the final opportunity for the Jets to elevate him from the practice squad before deciding whether to sign him to the active roster.
Defensive edge rusher Joseph Ossai, who has not yet played this season due to a foot injury, was a full participant in Friday’s practice but remains questionable for the game. Additional Jets players sitting out include safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (groin) and linebacker Kiko Mauigoa (quad), both ruled out, and running back Kene Nwangwu (back), who is doubtful for Sunday.
