Saffie Osborne, the rising British jockey, is set to compete in the Group 1 Golden Eagle at Royal Randwick on Saturday, partnering the four-year-old Australian debutant Amazing Journey. The race, known for its $10 million prize pool, represents another high-profile challenge for the 24-year-old who has quickly established herself on the international racing stage.
Osborne has enjoyed a breakthrough year, highlighted by several significant achievements. In September, she became the first female jockey to win a British Classic when Highwayman secured victory in the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster, ridden for trainer Joseph O’Brien. Her success followed her captaincy of the Great Britain team to a Shergar Cup triumph a month earlier, where she led alongside notable jockeys Ryan Moore and Dylan Browne McMonagle.
Describing the year as remarkable, Osborne noted that winning a British Classic had been a childhood ambition. She arrived in Sydney on Monday to prepare for the Golden Eagle and brings prior experience competing in Australia, having ridden for prominent trainers including Gai Waterhouse and Ciaron Maher.
Amazing Journey, the horse Osborne will ride in the Golden Eagle, was imported from the UK this year following a strong racing record. The four-year-old has won five of 12 starts in Britain and was acquired in August by clients of Ciaron Maher with the Golden Eagle as a specific target. Osborne has had a significant role in Amazing Journey’s successes, having ridden him to victory in three of those five wins. She expressed confidence leading into the race, anticipating another notable milestone in her burgeoning career.
